07 Feb Adopt a School
The Adopt a School Committee contributes hundreds of hours purchasing, organizing and distributing school supplies for the entire student body at an elementary school in Galveston County. A new school is selected each year based on the percentage of students in need. The committee also provides Reading is Fundamental (RIF) book distributions to the students throughout the school year.
In addition, many children in our community suffer from food insecurity. Those kids eat most of their meals while at school, courtesy of free or reduced lunch programs, but don’t have enough food when they go home on weekends.
To combat this problem, the JLGC fills backpacks with food for 50 children at Parker Elementary School in Galveston. Those children take the backpack home with them over the weekend to ensure they have something to eat. Over 75% of Parker’s students are on the free or reduced lunch program.
The JLGC plans to expand the program to include an elementary school on the mainland.
